MGI Tech launched Genoria AI, a new AI subsidiary tasked with developing and commercializing autonomous lab tools that can plan and execute experiments. The company described Genoria’s goal as building AI “lab agents” that combine large language models with laboratory automation to generate protocols, translate them into instrument-executable instructions, and learn from outcomes. MGI said Genoria has already demonstrated proof-of-concept work using a model called ProtoPilot, reportedly handling 294 intent-to-code tasks and multiple wet-lab workflows of increasing complexity, including plasmid construction and mutant engineering. The company also noted the system remains under development, with current focus on training for experiment understanding. MGI’s announcement signals a push toward AI-native biology workflows in tools and instrumentation, with Genoria planning to expand beyond China to international markets next year. For biotech developers, autonomous experimentation could reduce cycle times in discovery workflows if reliability and oversight standards mature.
