NewBiologix and Synastra Biotechnology signed an agreement to develop a stable producer cell line for Synastra’s investigational Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) gene therapy program. NewBiologix will use its Xcell platform to generate and characterize a research cell bank and support early manufacturing readiness, with an option to transition to a commercial license. The collaboration targets a core constraint in systemic AAV gene therapy: consistent, scalable, cost-effective production at potentially high vector doses. DMD is positioned as a stress test for the entire platform given the expected systemic dosing requirements. For gene therapy developers, the deal signals a shift toward embedding manufacturing into translational planning rather than treating process scale-up as a late-stage activity.
