Two studies published in Science described an RNA-guided immune system in viruses that appears to predate modern CRISPR, providing evidence of an evolutionary bridge from viral defense to bacterial CRISPR machinery. The work suggests the core logic of guide RNA targeting existed in viruses before it was adapted into the bacterial immune toolkit used for gene editing. If confirmed and expanded, the findings could expand the gene-editing toolkit by identifying related systems with different properties in targeting, specificity, and delivery. For research groups developing next-generation CRISPR variants, the new “ancestor” narrative also reframes which molecular mechanisms may be transferable across domains. Beyond editing applications, the studies add to the broader understanding of how RNA-guided immunity evolved and diversified across microbes and viruses.
