Moderna and CEPI said they are advancing an investigational mRNA vaccine targeting Bundibugyo virus—the species driving an ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. CEPI support is described as up to $50 million, with Moderna stating the program is designed to move into early human trials within months, subject to regulatory review. The effort is part of CEPI’s broader plan to fund three Bundibugyo candidates, including programs from IAVI (a recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus vector) and a University of Oxford candidate manufactured by the Serum Institute of India using a ChAdOx platform. CEPI reported selecting the set after global review and consultations including WHO, Africa CDC, and Gavi. For outbreak preparedness, the update targets a key gap: vaccines exist for some Ebola species, but not across the full range of virus species that can cause deadly disease in humans.
