The World Health Organization unveiled a six-month plan to contain the ongoing Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak, including scaling up point-of-care molecular diagnostics. WHO said the program will expand reference laboratory capacity for diagnostics and sequencing-based surveillance, while increasing use of a point-of-care PCR system from KH Medical. WHO estimated total investment needs at about $518 million, with Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus calling the plan a way to improve speed, coordination, and consistency based on lessons from prior Ebola emergencies. Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya said the outbreak’s case and death totals have already surpassed earlier Bundibugyo outbreaks at comparable time points. The plan highlights production and tech-transfer steps with KH Medical for the RadiOne point-of-care PCR system and focuses on earlier detection as a key lever in case management. As the response scales, diagnostic availability is expected to shape the accuracy of outbreak sizing and downstream epidemiology.
