WHO unveiled a six-month Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak plan centered on scaling point-of-care molecular diagnostics alongside reference laboratory capacity. The initiative, supported by Africa CDC, FIND, Unitaid, and local governments, targets wider deployment of a KH Medical test system while strengthening diagnostic testing and sequencing-based surveillance. WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the investment needed for the plan is about $518 million. Africa CDC director-general Jean Kaseya said current burden—397 cases and 63 deaths—already exceeds previous Bundibugyo outbreak case totals at similar time points, and emphasized that speed of testing is critical for reducing case-fatality. The plan also references a production and technology-transfer agreement with KH Medical for the RadiOne point-of-care PCR system, described as manufacturing diagnostics for Ebola strains and Marburg.
