Researchers at the University of Warwick, in collaboration with clinicians from University Hospital North Midlands NHS Trust and Imperial College London, used digital twin technology to evaluate a proposed protocol for transitioning acute respiratory distress syndrome patients onto airway pressure release ventilation. The approach aims to model ventilation physiology and stress outcomes without relying solely on bedside trial-and-error. Digital twins—computational models calibrated to individual physiology—are increasingly being applied to critical-care optimization, where dosing and ventilator parameter decisions can shift outcomes. This study focuses on a specific ventilation transition pathway, which could influence how clinicians standardize weaning or switching strategies. For the biotech and medtech ecosystem, the work is a concrete example of simulation-driven protocol development and may support future device evaluation and clinical decision-support deployments.
