Researchers at Yonsei University reported that bacteria typically found in the mouth can show increased overlap with fecal microbiomes in gastrointestinal cancer patients, raising the possibility of a diagnostic biomarker. In a cohort of 507 participants spanning metabolic dysfunction, gastric cancer (77 patients), colorectal cancer (86 patients), and 129 healthy controls, investigators collected mouth swabs and fecal samples. Using amplicon sequencing, the team tracked shared microbial gene signatures between oral and gut samples and built an index intended to measure microbial migration. Compared with healthy controls, the gastrointestinal cancer group’s index was roughly three times higher, even after adjusting for lifestyle variables such as alcohol use and exercise. The work follows earlier findings that Fusobacterium nucleatum was detected in colorectal cancer tissues, and it expands the concept beyond a single organism into a migration pattern measurable through DNA analysis. If validated prospectively, the approach could shorten diagnostic timelines by leveraging easily collected specimens for GI cancer detection.
