Cepheid announced an updated third-generation GeneXpert infectious disease PCR platform designed to improve testing speed and multiplex capacity while maintaining compatibility with the existing assay menu. The Danaher subsidiary said it will showcase the system at the Association for Diagnostics and Laboratory Medicine annual meeting, with a compact four-module configuration planned to begin shipping to U.S. customers in coming months. Additional configurations, including higher-capacity GeneXpert and GeneXpert Infinity systems, are under development. Cepheid said the upgrades incorporate hardware and software changes, including modifications to assay cartridges and improvements to connectivity for instrument monitoring and utilization tracking. The company also highlighted chip-based PCR and expanded plexing capabilities that push future assay capacity to the 20- to 30-target range. For clinical labs, the announcement signals another step in standardizing high-throughput molecular testing, with module-based flexibility intended to reduce integration burden for customers.
