Guardant Health said national medical benefit manager Carelon will cover its Guardant Shield blood-based test for colorectal cancer screening, effective Nov. 15. The policy update is expected to drive fully covered lives for about 90 million patients, representing roughly three-quarters of eligible patients for colorectal screening. Carelon’s coverage applies to average-risk patients above age 45, aligning with evolving CRC screening guidance. Guardant described Shield as a noninvasive cell-free DNA methylation blood test using methylation partitioning to detect CRC-associated alterations. The decision supports Guardant’s commercial expansion into payer-managed markets and builds on earlier guideline inclusion by the American Cancer Society. For other liquid biopsy and screening developers, the Carelon reimbursement signal reinforces how coverage arrangements with large benefit managers can accelerate adoption even when clinical utility data is established earlier.
