A study highlighted how mouth bacteria could migrate into gastrointestinal compartments in certain cancers, raising the prospect of a microbiome-based diagnostic signal. Researchers at Yonsei University analyzed mouth swabs and fecal samples from 507 participants, including people with gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, and metabolic dysfunctions. The team developed an index measuring shared gene signatures between oral and fecal samples as a proxy for microbial migration. Compared with healthy controls, gastrointestinal cancer patients showed an index about three times higher, even after accounting for lifestyle factors. While the study supports further validation, it offers a concrete biomarker approach—using DNA analysis of oral and gut microbiomes—to potentially simplify earlier detection workflows for gastric cancer.
