A purported biotech conference in Boston appears to have been a ransomware/front-style phishing operation targeting life-science professionals. Proofpoint reported that the BioTold 2026 event website functioned as camouflage for a targeted phishing campaign designed to trick recipients into downloading malicious software through conference invitations and sponsorship solicitations. The report said high-profile names listed as speakers or sponsors—including representatives tied to Harvard’s George Church, Broad Institute figures, and insitro CEO Daphne Koller—denied affiliation when contacted. It also said multiple industry sponsors including Thermo Fisher Scientific, Illumina and Agilent confirmed they were not involved. For biotech leaders and frontline teams, the immediate impact is operational: event-related email and download links are now a credible threat vector, elevating the priority of credential checks, domain verification, and endpoint controls around conference outreach.
