UC San Diego joined the Innovative Genomics Institute as its fourth UC partner campus, expanding the IGI’s genome-editing tool development across health, agriculture, and environmental applications. The announcement is tied to IGI’s mission to scale CRISPR-derived solutions beyond core human-health work. IGI was founded by Nobel laureate Jennifer Doudna and originally formed as a partnership between UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco. With UC San Diego’s addition, the center brings new strengths in environmental and marine science and biomedical and engineering capabilities. The IGI’s existing collaboration with UC San Diego researchers includes applied microbiology work such as “jumbo phage” approaches against antibiotic-resistant infections.
