Researchers from the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health reported interim phase 1 data for a dual Lassa fever–rabies vaccine candidate described in Nature Medicine. In healthy adults, the vaccine was reported as safe and generated immune responses against both pathogens. The lead investigator, Justin Ortiz, MD, MS, framed the concept as a combined product to potentially reduce the logistics of delivering two vaccines in regions where both diseases remain significant threats. Investigators highlighted that if efficacy is confirmed, the approach could streamline prevention strategies in areas with constrained access. The WHO lists Lassa virus as a public-health threat in western Africa, and the report emphasizes the ongoing unmet need: there are currently no vaccines against Lassa fever on the market.
