OpenAI’s Startup Fund and Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund joined a $45 million seed round for Coherence, a brain-implant startup building a device intended to detect cancer-specific electrical signals and deliver targeted stimulation. The company said it is preparing its first chronic human trial in glioblastoma and is pursuing FDA breakthrough device designation. Investors cited the potential to extend the platform beyond glioblastoma, including preclinical expansion plans in pancreatic cancer. The lead implant, paired with a wearable and app-based data pipeline, reflects a growing cluster of oncology “diagnose-and-modulate” device approaches that combine sensing with therapy delivery. For the sector, the funding is a signal that non-traditional therapeutics—especially neuromodulation with built-in measurement—remain attractive when teams can articulate a clear path to first-in-human device testing and iterative learning from longitudinal signal data.
