Institut Pasteur launched ACT-CHIK, a four-year project funded with €15.3 million by the Global Health EDCTP3 Joint Undertaking under the EU Horizon Europe program. The initiative is designed to advance chikungunya vaccine development in Africa and prepare for regional manufacturing. ACT-CHIK will move MV-CHIK, a measles-virus-based chikungunya vaccine candidate originally developed at Institut Pasteur, through a large-scale Phase Ib/III trial across four African countries. The project also includes technology transfer planning to an African vaccine manufacturer to support local production capacity. Pasteur said chikungunya remains a neglected disease in Africa despite increasing reported burden, and that current vaccine use is limited largely to travelers due to cost and access constraints. The program aims to generate clinical data in the populations most impacted by endemic transmission. The launch adds another example of EU-backed, region-focused trial infrastructure intended to shorten access gaps and build manufacturing ecosystems where future outbreaks are expected to be hardest to manage.
