Researchers proposed a diffusion MRI approach using soma and neurite density imaging (SANDI) to estimate cellular-level brain damage in living patients with Huntington’s disease. In scans of 56 people with Huntington’s and 57 matched healthy volunteers, the technique detected abnormalities consistent with tissue findings from post-mortem work, including patterns in basal ganglia regions and comparisons with relatively spared thalamic areas.
