A new extracellular vesicle (EV) engineering strategy published in Nature Biomedical Engineering aimed to turn EVs from generic delivery vehicles into precision “mail services.” The study described how surface engineering improved what the authors call “super homotypic targeting,” directing EV cargo to intended cellular neighborhoods. Rather than relying on natural EV tropism alone, the approach emphasized modifying the EV surface to strengthen cell-specific uptake patterns. The work evaluated the targeting effect of the engineered vesicles and demonstrated improved homotypic delivery performance. For translational EV therapeutics, the paper provides a practical design pathway to increase on-target delivery while reducing off-target exposure, a persistent hurdle for next-generation vesicle-based drugs.
