Rutin binds the splicing factor hnRNP L and disrupts its liquid–liquid phase separation, shifting a metabolic regulatory axis linked to pulmonary fibrosis in cell and mouse models, according to a Frontiers in Pharmacology study. The work positions LLPS regulation as an upstream control point for profibrotic metabolic programs. By tying a natural flavonoid to a specific RNA-binding protein condensate mechanism, the study links a small-molecule lead direction with a mechanistic fibrosis pathway. It also suggests that targeting hnRNP L phase behavior could modulate downstream lactate/PKM2 signaling relevant to fibrotic remodeling. For the field, the study adds to the momentum of “condensate biology” translating into disease-relevant intervention strategies.
