Industry tooling is shifting toward smarter monitoring and process control for biomanufacturing as batch sizes shrink and advanced therapies proliferate. A new report highlights proof-of-concept work on a miniature viable cell density sensor designed for small-scale bioprocessing, aiming to deliver near real-time PAT measurement in volumes around 25 µL. Researchers reported a bioimpedance-based device with a footprint near 1 x 10 mm and detection limits suitable for CHO viable cell density tracking, with correlations to reference methods presented as close to commercial probes. The target is to address the gap where conventional probes are too large and offline counting disrupts continuous or small-volume workflows. For operators, improved PAT in small vessels can tighten feedback control, reduce variability, and support comparability strategies—key needs as sponsors intensify process automation and monitoring.
