City of Hope researchers reported preclinical results indicating that modular, plug-and-play CAR T cells can accept engineered adaptors after infusion. The work suggests a potential method for retargeting immune cells as tumor antigen landscapes evolve over time. The preclinical study frames modularity as an engineering solution to a key CAR T limitation—fixed targeting once the cells are manufactured—by decoupling the recognition layer from the core cell product. If validated, the approach could broaden the applicability of CAR T therapy beyond current manufacturing and antigen constraints. While still early and limited to animal models, the findings add to the momentum behind next-generation “reconfigurable” immune cell platforms aimed at improving long-term control and reducing escape.
