Thailand launched its first-in-human trial of GD2-targeted CAR T cells, using an autologous approach for patients with relapsed or refractory GD2-positive solid tumors. The TARGETS study is a prospective, open-label, single-arm Phase I/IIa basket trial designed to evaluate safety first and then assess early anti-tumor activity. The trial is expected to enroll about 20 patients across multiple centers, with tumor types including neuroblastoma, glioma, and osteosarcoma—areas where CAR T remains less mature than in hematologic malignancies. Trial documentation notes the protocol was accepted by BMC Cancer and registered in the Thai Clinical Trials Registry. The therapy uses a second-generation engineered CAR specific to GD2, where the CAR T product is manufactured from each patient’s own immune cells. The study is notable because it tackles a core CAR T challenge—solid tumor targeting and efficacy—while expanding clinical experimentation capacity in Asia for immune cell therapies beyond blood cancers.
