Sichuan University scientists developed edible microbeads that selectively trap dietary fats in the gastrointestinal tract, showing promise in weight management without systemic drug exposure. These beads, composed of bioactive polyphenols and seaweed-derived materials, demonstrated 81% fat absorption efficacy across fat types in vitro and reduced fat accumulation in rodent models. This approach contrasts with traditional appetite suppressants by focusing on fat absorption, potentially reducing adverse effects such as diarrhea associated with existing fat-blocking drugs.
