The Gates Foundation has committed up to $35 million to Profound Therapeutics to fund development of novel solutions for preeclampsia and eclampsia. The investment includes an initial $20 million and up to an additional $15 million tied to experimental milestones. Profound plans to use its Profoundry platform and agentic AI tools to search placental tissue and serum samples for proteins linked to the conditions, including proteins that may be missed by conventional assays. The company frames the program as building from an “expanded” proteome approach to identify novel biomarkers and first-in-class drug targets. The funding adds momentum to translational women’s health drug discovery, an area that has historically received less clinical and research attention than many other indications.
