Jazz Pharmaceuticals’ acquisition of Actio Biosciences has spawned a new biotech, Setara, built from “Actio’s ashes” and funded to pursue rare disease genetics at scale. Setara raised a $90 million Series A to carry forward the epilepsy program ABS-1230’s remaining portfolio under new ownership and to advance a genetics-driven pipeline. Setara’s lead program, STAR-0871, is a small-molecule TRPV4 inhibitor aimed at Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2C, with a strategy to extend insights into broader markets including overactive bladder. Leadership said the Series A was anchored in the existing investor syndicate from Actio, with Jazz joining as a new shareholder after the acquisition. The launch reflects continued investor appetite for platform-like rare disease approaches and one-to-many translational bets grounded in genetic biology.
