Nirrin Technologies is pushing a model-free spectroscopy approach—pure component analysis (PCA)—aimed at reducing cost and complexity in biopharma process analytics. The company says its tunable laser near-infrared (TL-NIR) platform can return concentration readouts directly, avoiding the need for labor-intensive empirical models built through extensive experimental campaigns. Nirrin’s CEO Bryan Hassell told GEN that model-building for NIR or Raman methods can be expensive and tightly coupled to specific instruments and process conditions, requiring rebuilds when platforms change. In contrast, PCA uses known component spectra, enabling direct concentration resolution that can be used continuously for manufacturing decisions. Hassell highlighted speed and workflow savings, citing faster protein analysis versus variable-pathlength UV and reduced sample handling steps, including no dilution or sample preparation. The company also positioned TL-NIR as a way to bring measurements in-house that are often outsourced to HPLC, cutting per-sample costs and turnaround times. If validated at scale, the approach could reduce development-to-manufacturing friction for sponsors adopting PAT and real-time release strategies, especially where instrument variance and model maintenance have been persistent operational burdens.
