Eli Lilly broke ground on a new Houston, Texas site dedicated to manufacturing oral GLP-1 medicines, marking a major step in the company’s onshore production push. The facility, part of a broader plan for ten US manufacturing sites, targets domestic supply for oral obesity therapies. Lilly said the $6.5 billion investment will focus largely on producing orforglipron (Foundayo), its oral GLP-1 receptor agonist approved by the FDA for obesity and weight-adjacent conditions. The company positioned the move as part of a broader $50 billion commitment to increase domestic pharmaceutical production and reduce shortages. Lilly also emphasized workforce development, including a partnership with San Jacinto College aimed at building a local biopharma talent pipeline. The Houston project is framed as the largest active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) investment in Texas history, with the state and local leadership publicly backing the expansion. For the sector, the announcement signals continued capacity build-out that can influence availability, pricing leverage, and future capacity for high-demand oral incretin competitors.
