Technion and Tel Aviv University researchers introduced BetaDescribe, an AI system that converts protein sequences into natural-language descriptions intended to reveal the functions of previously unknown proteins. In a Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences paper, the team reported that translating sequence information into text can help researchers interpret protein roles, potentially accelerating target discovery and downstream drug development workflows. The approach reframes sequence-to-function understanding as a language generation task, aiming to improve how scientists explore protein annotations when experimental characterization is limited. If generalizable, the method could reduce the bottleneck between sequencing outputs and actionable functional hypotheses in biology-focused discovery pipelines.
