The Canadian Alliance for Skills and Training in Life Sciences (CASTL) said the Government of Canada is investing up to $8.7 million through the Sectoral Workforce Solutions Program to expand biomanufacturing workforce training. The Supporting Workforce Capacity in Canada’s Biomanufacturing Sector project is expected to support training for up to 1,800 people across Canada. CASTL’s plan targets skills shortages by providing hands-on education for roles required in highly regulated bioprocessing environments, with facilities in Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and British Columbia. The funding is intended to strengthen domestic capacity to produce vaccines, drugs, and other healthcare products. For sponsors and CDMOs, workforce expansion can directly affect timeline risk on manufacturing scale-up and tech transfer, particularly as clinical pipelines broaden and single-use and advanced bioreactor strategies require specialized operators.
