Sapphiros received a $12.4 million Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) award to develop its molecular diagnostics platform for rapid detection of biothreat pathogens in point-of-care and decentralized settings. The initial program period is 24 months. Sapphiros said the effort will use its proprietary molecular technologies paired with a single-use capillary blood collection system developed by Satio. The companies previously worked together under BARDA funding for an Ebola patch-based diagnostic. The award positions Sapphiros to advance toward accessible, rapid testing during biological threats, reflecting BARDA’s continued focus on operational readiness beyond centralized lab workflows. It also signals sustained support for connected diagnostics designed to function in community settings. Watch points for biotech and public health stakeholders include assay performance metrics in real-world sample conditions and regulatory pathways for deployment as threats emerge.
