A prospective pilot study reported that symptom-guided home transfusions for hospice patients with hematologic malignancies were safe and feasible, with no transfusion reactions and no in-hospital deaths in the pilot cohort. The design focused on practical delivery—moving transfusion capacity into patients’ homes while using symptom guidance to determine transfusion needs. The outcome suggests operational feasibility, which is often the limiting factor for extending supportive care beyond hospitals. For palliative hematology, the data support further controlled studies on safety, caregiver burden, and cost effectiveness of decentralized transfusion programs.
