Researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania reported that AI can point to unexpected antibiotic candidate sites within prion proteins. The work focuses on prion and prion-like proteins that may contain short hidden peptides (“prionins”) capable of killing drug-resistant bacteria. The study suggests that proteins known for rare, fatal neurodegenerative diseases could also carry molecular features linked to immune defense. By combining computational prediction with drug discovery screening approaches, the team identified antibiotic candidates associated with these prion-derived sequences. If translated, the approach could widen the pool of biologically grounded targets for antibiotic discovery amid persistent antimicrobial resistance challenges.
