A landmark analysis of 46 studies reports that carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae now accounts for 51% of clinical isolates in Iran. The study further identifies blaOXA-48-like gene families as the dominant molecular mechanism in circulating strains. The finding raises the urgency for infection control, antimicrobial stewardship, and treatment strategy updates in a hospital environment where carbapenem options can be undermined by widespread resistance. For biotech, the data reinforces the continuing need for novel antimicrobials, diagnostics that rapidly identify resistance mechanisms, and stewardship-aligned development plans.
