Alveo Technologies partnered with the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) to develop and evaluate a molecular point-of-care diagnostic for Lassa fever. The collaboration targets limited laboratory access in West Africa by using isothermal amplification combined with electrical impedance sensing within a cartridge-based design. Alveo and UTMB plan clinical-site evaluation in Nigeria and Sierra Leone. UTMB researcher Courtney Woolsey emphasized how immediate diagnostic capability would change local response timing to suspected cases. The agreement also includes field testing work tied to the company’s Sense Poultry platform for avian influenza surveillance and validation under maximum biosafety conditions at UTMB’s Galveston National Laboratory, extending the operational footprint beyond a single pathogen.
