NIH launched the Bio Genesis Mission to use AI to accelerate biomedical research, embedded within the broader Genesis Mission initiative created via a White House executive order. The program is funded through more than $5 billion in committed federal resources and will leverage contributions across 15 federal agencies. NIH director Jay Bhattacharya said NIH has allocated more than $1.2 billion in obligated FY 2026 funding and planned FY 2027 funding to address six challenge areas including forecasting complex biological systems, scaling biomedical manufacturing, boosting pediatric cancer research, accelerating drug development, and strengthening biosecurity. The plan also emphasizes cross-agency data infrastructure: HHS, DOE, and DOD will integrate molecular, genomic, phenotypic, clinical, and real-world datasets to identify new uses for existing drugs and speed translation of new therapies.
