Google DeepMind and the Wellcome Sanger Institute launched an AI genomics consortium designed to build large genomic datasets for AI-driven biological research. Google.org and DeepMind committed $5 million per year to support the partnership over five years. The consortium will generate resources tailored to training predictive biology machine learning models, with the partners intending to recruit additional collaborators into the program. The initiative builds on existing collaborations such as an AI genomics fellowship and efforts to strengthen AI capabilities in lower- and middle-income countries. Sanger’s Julia Wilson said the resources are intended to be shared broadly with the research community to accelerate discovery and broaden impact across the life sciences.
