An AI system designed to quantify what endoscopists actually see during upper GI procedures showed a strong link with higher early gastric cancer detection. In a landmark, multi-center trial across 24 centers, researchers used an AI scoring method to measure stomach-lining visibility and found the metric correlated with detection of early gastric cancer and precancerous lesions. The report frames the value of “quality of visualization” as a controllable variable, rather than treating detection rates purely as a function of operator skill or patient risk factors. The AI scoring approach can also support real-time feedback and reduce missed lesions caused by incomplete inspection. For practice, this is a step toward procedural standardization—turning endoscopy performance into measurable, auditable signals that can be compared across sites.
