Researchers from Helmholtz Munich, Technical University of Munich (TUM), and the University of Basel released MemBrain v2, an AI tool that automates 3D membrane mapping from cryo-electron tomography. Published in Nature Methods, the system cuts analysis time from weeks to a few hours. The work targets a bottleneck that has limited how quickly membrane-associated structures can be quantified in high-resolution 3D image datasets. By improving the end-to-end pipeline for mapping membranes, the tool aims to make membrane phenotyping more scalable for cell biology and drug discovery teams. For translational research settings that rely on cryo-ET for target validation, faster membrane reconstruction can reduce iteration cycles between experimental design, model building, and interpretation.
