Researchers at MIT and collaborators have harnessed generative AI to design novel antibiotics targeting drug-resistant pathogens like Neisseria gonorrhoeae and multi-drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Through screening over 36 million AI-generated compounds, the team identified structurally distinct candidates with unique mechanisms disrupting bacterial membranes. Published in Cell, this study demonstrates AI's potential to explore vast chemical spaces beyond traditional libraries, opening new avenues for antibiotic innovation amid rising resistance.
